چکیده

We generalize the derivation of dynamo coefficient α of Field et al. (1999) to include the following two aspects: first, the de-correlation times of velocity field and magnetic field are different; second, the magnetic Prandtl number can be arbitrary. We find that the contributions of velocity field and magnetic field to the α effect are not equal, but affected by their different statistical properties. In the limit of large kinetic Reynolds number and large magnetic Reynolds number, α-coefficient may not be small if the de-correlation times of velocity field and magnetic field are shorter than the eddy turn-over time of the MHD turbulence. We also show that under certain circumstances, for example if the kinetic helicity and current helicity are comparable, α depends insensitively on magnetic Prandtl number, while if either the kinetic helicity or the current helicity is dominated by the other one, a different magnetic Prandtl number will significantly change the dynamo α effect. Fluctuation dynamo and turbulent induction at low magnetic Prandtl numbers

This paper is a detailed report on a programme of direct numerical simulations of incompressible nonhelical randomly forced MHD turbulence that are used to settle a long-standing issue in the turbulent dynamo theory and demonstrate that the fluctuation dynamo exists in the limit of large magnetic Reynolds number Rm ≫ 1 and small magnetic Prandtl number Pm ≪ 1. The dependence of the critical Rmc...

A Spherical Plasma Dynamo Experiment

We propose a plasma experiment to be used to investigate fundamental properties of astrophysical dynamos. The highly conducting, fast flowing plasma will allow experimenters to explore the high-magnetic-Reynolds-number regime. The plasma is confined using a ring-cusp strategy and subject to a toroidal differentially rotating outer boundary condition. As proof of principle, we present magnetohyd...

The inverse cascade and nonlinear alpha-effect in simulations of isotropic helical hydromagnetic turbulence

A numerical model of isotropic homogeneous turbulence with helical forcing is investigated. The resulting flow, which is essentially the prototype of the α dynamo of mean-field dynamo theory, produces strong dynamo action with an additional large scale field on the scale of the box (at wavenumber k = 1; forcing is at k = 5). This large scale field is nearly force-free and exceeds the equipartit...

Effect of Variable Thermal Conductivity and the Inclined Magnetic Field on MHD Plane Poiseuille Flow in a Porous Channel with Non-Uniform Plate Temperature

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of the variable thermal conductivity and the inclined uniform magnetic field on the plane Poiseuille flow of viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid between two porous plates Joule heating in the presence of a constant pressure gradient through non-uniform plate temperature. It is assumed that the fluid injection occurs at lower pl...

Simulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar

Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...
